Fairy tale forest

in travelfeed •  last month

Time flies and I've realized that it's been ages since I've promised to show you the second part of Efteling. Life happens and I was busy with various things. I'm sure many of us want to finish certain tasks that they kept postponing during the year before the year ends. Well, I'm definitely one of those people. There is still quite a lot to do and I'm determined to finish everything before going to Slovakia for Christmas. I will be spending more than two weeks there and I am sure that I will gather a lot of material for my future posts as we plan to travel around if it's not going to be too much snow.

A friend of mine moved to The Netherlands last year. She has never visited any amusement park before and wasn't excited to go to Efteling when her boyfriend told her that he would like to show her around. She thought that it was just a funfair and preferred to stay at home as she was tired after a long week at work. At the end, he convinced her to go and when I talked to her I understood that she really enjoyed it. She told me that she knew she was wrong as soon as she saw the entrance. It is a big strange shaped building and it's clear that it's not an entrance to a small funfair.

I think I've talked enough and now we should start our tour!

I like to explore Efteling by foot as you come across small things that you wouldn't see otherwise but I know that many people prefer to sit back and enjoy the train ride. This fairy tale train takes you across the amusement park and you can hop on or off anytime you want. I mean, of course you have to wait for the train to stop before hoping on or off 😊

I really like this photo with a sunbeam.

Last time, I've showed you various attractions inside and today I will take you to the fairy tale forest.

20191026_141835.jpg

The gate is protected by a witch. You rather don't make her angry.

20191026_141850.jpg

First, we will visit the Sleeping Beauty Castle.

20191026_142107.jpg

Everyone is asleep, even the guard. We don't want to wake them up while they wait for their prince, so we move on..

20191026_142336.jpg

To the gnomes living in a mushroom house.. You can go inside and see how they live.

20191026_142857.jpg

I thought that this guy was from Long, Broad and Sharpsigh which is a Bohemian fairy tale, but I was wrong. Apparently, he is the Long Neck from The six servants, a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. His neck goes up and down all day and kids are getting very excited when it's moving.

20191026_143011.jpg

It is the first time that I've seen this grumpy fish. It's part of the fairy tale about Pinocchio. I've tried to remember this fish from the fairy tale but with no luck. Maybe there is another version in The Netherlands 😊

20191026_143458.jpg

Do you remember the fairy tale about Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm? It even smelled there like gingerbread. Yum!

20191026_144021.jpg

These guards make sure that all kids behave well.

20191026_151222.jpg

Tom Thumb is the smallest inhabitant of the fairy tale forest. He stole the Giant’s boots when he was asleep and now, he can run so fast that even the giant can't catch him.

Can you see Tom stealing the boots? If you want to see him, you have to whisper 'Klein duimpje' and he will appear. But you have to watch carefully as you never know where he will be because he likes to hide from you.

At first, I didn't notice that this tree would be any different than other trees. But then I saw the face and realize that it was moving!

20191026_152004.jpg

The Emperor's New Clothes by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. The Emperor is fully dressed here but we saw him naked too! Kids were bursting into laughter.

20191026_152215.jpg

And before we go to the roller-coasters we can stay for a few minutes and listen to the wise tree telling us stories.

20191026_152423.jpg

I am not a big fan of the roller-coasters but always let my husband convince me to go to at least one of them. This time I chose the Flying Dutchman which has a great story but is scary and runs directly in a lake and with my luck I always get wet. It was not different this time...

20191026_170606.jpg

You go through a dark humid room, you hear water drops falling near you, the wind will take your breath away and then it comes. Your car climbs slowly up and flies down at speed which feels like you're going to fall out of the car. I kept screaming: I will kill you! And my husband knew it was addressed to him 😊

20191026_170755.jpg

I had so much adrenaline that I suggested to try another roller-coaster. It was Baron 1898 and I regretted my decision as soon as the car was hanging on top of the roller-coaster and I had no idea when it will go down. This feeling is unbearable when you know that there is a 37.5 m free fall into the mine shaft at a speed of 90 km/h. But I survived!

20191026_171047.jpg

There are many more roller-coasters and other exciting attractions and I might show them to you another day when I'll dare to try them out.

Thank you for reading!

Cheers!

Martina

welcome back Martina, we've missed you :)

That looks like a lot of fun and I like to see the stories you tell about them... I do remember some of the fairy tales you mentioned, but I too didn't remember the grumpy fish :P

It looks like you are still out having fun (which is a wonderful thing to know), so I look forward to your posts next year and hope you have a very very happy holiday season!!!

Oh, I wouldn't say I'm having fun :) I would say that I'm trying to adapt to winter right now. I'm getting cold just thinking about the fact that it's going to last for at least 3 more months :D

Hope you're doing well, Dave!

Do you have any special plans for holidays?

That looks like such an interesting and fun place to visit. It's very whimsical. I love the picture of the guy with the long neck and I agree that the one of the train with the sunbeams coming through is very cool. Nice one!

You can easily spend there a few days and don't get bored as there are so many attractions. I really like coming back to this place. It's great when you feel down as it makes you feel much better :)

Thank you for stopping by!

Great article! :)

Thank you so much! I'm glad that you like it :)

Yay so great to to have a post from you in my feed today. Such an interesting park. The light was great for the pictures and of course you always give a great tour.

Thank you so much Sara! I hope to be back more regularly. I just don't have time to travel at the moment, so there is also nothing to post about..

I hope you're doing well! :)

That looks like a pretty fun place...Now I wanna go!

That first shot...Is that all thatched roof? Amazing.

Very cool.

Do you have anything similar in Australia too?

Yes! And I don't think it's really attached. When you're there it looks like it was just one piece. It's made of straws which becomes now a very popular material for the roofs again (it's an old technique). You can see many houses in The Netherlands using it...

Hmm, no I don't think we do. We have theme parks of course, on the Gold Coast, Queensland, but nothing like this one...They are more traditional theme parks (Movie World, Dreamworld, Seaworld etc.)

We saw many traditional thatched roofs whilst in the UK last year...I love them although they need re-doing of course so might be a pain in the butt! Still, they look cool and as I'm an analogue dude who should have been born 500 years ago they appeal to me.

The place in this park looks like a bit of fun though so thanks for sharing it, and of course, for your reply also. ✌️

A friend of mine is in Australia right now and she loves it. I'll have to go there one day too and then I might visit one of those parks as well.

Really? I thought you were all high tech and so :) I'm not sure how often you need to repair them but I guess that each roof eventually needs repairing..

My pleasure! Thank you for stopping by! :)

I thought you were all high tech

High-tech or high maintenance? Lol.

I get by, I'm no dum dum I guess...Just not overly genius either.

Australia is good. So much to see and do. Good that your friend likes it. It's like anywhere though, there's nice places all over...Just gotta find them.

Hahaha, I guess that you wife would have to say if you're high maintenance or not :)

Yes, sure there are. I've been living in Switzerland for almost 9 years and spent so many weekends traveling around here but there is still so much to do that I'm afraid one lifetime won't be enough to see everything just in this small country...

I guess that your wife would have to say if you're high maintenance or not

I can answer on her behalf..."Yes." 😂

So many people don't se much of their own country. It's a shame I think. Aussies are always eager to travel abroad, but there's so much here...Me? I do both. Life's too short not to.
